Participatory Speculative Design

Speculative design methods for public libraries

Project Details

In this project, we engaged with 200+ public library professionals to imagine possible futures of the Fulton County Library System (Atlanta, GA). We deployed a novel participatory design booklet in which which librarians used to express their ideas about the role of technology in libraries and he role of libraries in their communities. The activity encouraged the participants freely interpret a fictional technology from the future including AR/VR, robots, smart sensors, and others. The booklet was in the form of a program form the future which participants had to fill out using different components of the workshop including images, stickers, testimonials from future library patrons, etc. Video recap can be seen here.
